The Educator's PLN

The personal learning network for educators

I learned today that I have been asked to speak on behalf of education at the Symposium for Social Change in New York City on 5/3/10.  Excited and humbled are understatements as I will have the ear of some of the most influential people in the Northeast.  Here is a description and link to the event:

A nationwide series of forums in conjunction with city and state economic development offices to provide a collaborative platform in which diverse groups come together in a open dialogue to accelerate social change. Attended by social impact investors, venture capital firms, emerging businesses, foundations and organizations serving the community – to be held in New York, Los Angeles, Washington DC and Florida. The Foundation facilitates the collaboration among the business community, social impact investors, organizations and the government sector to solve social problems collectively. We are fostering leadership and moving people to work together to create impact as individuals and as groups.

I have been asked to supply a list of articles, of which 2 will be selected, that will serve as fuel for the discussion/talk.  Specifically, I am looking for articles focusing on innovative change in K-12 education that not only includes radical ideas, but implementation strategies as well. Thanks everyone! Feel free to share your thoughts on social change in education as well.  I plan to knock the socks off of the symposium attendees with everything I have learned over this past year from all of you!

Eric,

The links you posted seem to be broken, just fyi. You're going to be awesome! Congratulations, they are very lucky to have you.

Katie
Fixed! Thanks for the heads up :)
Good luck to you, Eric. I will think about the articles and if I find one that I think you might want to consider, I will send it along. As educators, we need a voice. I am glad we have yours.
Sir Ken Robinson comes to mind as a voice in the forefront of the dire need for us to free creativity and true learning from the limitations of the current system:

Best to you in this venture Eric! Congratulations. May you speak true and your voice be heard. Thanks for reaching out for help. Will continue to look for other pieces that might help.

I agree with John Altieri. Sir Ken Robinson is the best!

I also came across this article from a former frustrated teacher and thought it was very interesting. It's about teaching kids how to be entrepreneurs in schools so they can break the cycle of negative belief systems about money and being educated so they can graduate to become something other than someone else's employee. Check out the article "Kids Can Learn To Make Money What It will Take" at http://ow.ly/17l99 It gives an interesting web link as well.

Good luck! I'll keep looking and suggesting!

Irene
Hope I'm understanding the request... this is something we started this year - ground zero - innovation lab... next fall - ground zero - your school - design it and your pd - design it - each with a 4 yr plan embedded.

We feel so strongly that this is a very doable disruption for any school to start with us next fall, that we decided it's worth doing a crazy bold shout out to the President - only because we want a bigger voice - so that those interested might hear. Maybe your voice will be bigger than the President even Eric. [note:the crazy bold shout out post has all the pieces above linked at the bottom.]

The above app is due March15. Students are currently working on a more direct message to submit (and rewriting the plans in adfree sites), with more examples of student work, etc.
So - if this is along the lines of what you're looking for - we'll have a cleaner version by then.
I just submitted those ideas to Ed.gov - would be cool if anyone who feels the same about changing ed would go there and join, find "monika h" and join my network.

Let's tweak whatever needs to be tweaked.. or changed (i can edit any of it).. I just feel we need to ship on this one - via Seth Godin. One strong voice on Ed.gov might be noticed.. make the change we are all craving.

I would love anyone with brilliant eyes and clear voice to embrace these 3 wikis.. they were just created in the last month, with plans to clean them up before fall. I'm thinking sooner might help our case.
A well-known thinker about school improvement is William Daggert:

Eric Shenenger may want to consult the list of white papers found at the International Center for Leadership in Education.
Many of Daggert's papers are there.

Dear Eric,
Congratulations on the task of speaking for educators everywhere! You'll do just fine. I did some reading and came across this article that you may find interesting. It speaks about a district utilizing open source to provide social networking and content building access to all within a safe learning environment. Social Networking for the K-12 set. Good luck and thank you for accepting this honor on behalf of the professionals leading reform in schools across the nation.
