The Educator's PLN

The personal learning network for educators

I'm trying to compile a reading list. Looking for 'getting started' or '1st years in teaching' sort of books as well as 'classics'. I'm a secondary english preservice teacher, so anything specific to that would be appreciated :)

"The Art and Science of Teaching" by Robert Marzano
thank you!
The First Days of School - Harry Wong - good video series too, Ron Clark's books are good, Trelease's Read Aloud Handbook, Rafe Esquith's Teach LIke your Hair's On Fire

Hope this helps.
I suggest:
1) Practical English Language Teaching by David Nunan (editor) with interesting articles by many contributing specialists;
It offers a through yet practical overwiew of language teaching methodology for teachers and teachers in preparation.
2) Learning Teaching by Jim Scrivener : It helps you to understand the basic principles of working in a language classroom, shows you how to plan sucessful activities, lessons and courses and offers hundreds of immediately usable ideas and techniques to involve your students. Great for experienced teachers or beginners.
I would recommend "Teaching Outside The Box" by LouAnne Johnson. She was the mastermind behind the movie, "Dangerous Minds". She has written several great books, but TOB is one targeted for new inservice teachers looking for resources on classroom management and motivation techniques.
The First Year and Beyond by Rick Wormeli - While not as concise as the Wong book, Wormeli does a much better job explaining the "why" for doing certain things. For a reflective teacher, knowing the "why" helps allows an educator to adapt the strategies introduced in the book to a wide variety of situations.

Thanks for all the great suggestions! I'm trying to catch up on a lot of reading over my winter recess and have been to the library twice already :)
Just today I read "Teaching as an Act of Love" by Richard Lakin. Much wisdom and insight to be gained from this book. Right now it's a free download from his website, too!
Currently reading "What Great Teachers Do Differently" by Todd Whitaker. Great ideas to keep you focused on being a great teacher. For new teachers it would give them goals to focus on... great read.
The Element by Sir Ken Robinson and The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman

Both, I think, paint a picture of what new teachers (and vets as well) should be preparing their students for.

I am a big fan of Sir Ken Robinson's books.
