Diane and All, Delighted to see your group on brain based teaching and look forward to connecting here! I like your rubric.  My partner teacher and I tell the kids that they need to have the word "because" in their thinking stem.  This helps them "explain" their thinking.

 

I'm so glad you're finding success with the stem!  My partner teacher came up with the idea and formulated to what we use now.

 

I also like your summary rubric as well.  I find even in Third grade they struggle with summaries.  They either give too much info or not enough.  Sometimes they focus on elements that are not really that important or they assume you know something.
