I've been doing some reading in a class that I am taking, and I am wondering if anyone uses "anchored word instruction" for teaching vocabulary?

Another school year is off and running.  We have had a great start using Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom to kick off the first couple of weeks of school.  I have had a challenging time getting my independent learning centers up and running this year.  I have a handful of kiddos who have had absolutely no experience with other children or with work tools.  Any tips?

Don, I also do a week of activities with Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.  The children love that story.  We start school Sept. 4, and I begin the school year with The Kissing Hand.  The next three stories I use are Chicka Chicka, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, and Pete the Cat Rockin' in  My School Shoes. All of these are so much fun, and I can do lots of alphabet and fine motor activities related to the stories.  The bonus is, the children love these stories, so they are perfect for teaching listening behaviors, story structure, and ways to respond to stories.

We have been reading Chicka-Chicka-Boom Boom for our alphabet learning. Next week we will take a box of Alpha-Bit cereal, sort the letters into egg cartons so everyone can have a set of letters and then glue them onto Coconut trees that we will have cut, colored and pasted together before.  A full week of activity and learning. I believe they will enjoy it. We will hang all of it on the wall outside the classroom, too.

This is always an exciting time of year in kindergarten.  I enjoy all of the hours I spend each year getting my room ready for the new kiddos.  This year I have decorated in a new theme: owls and polka dots. The room looks fresh and cheery.  I have also added a full time science center which will start the year with monarch butterflies - which will hopefully not have all turned to chrysalises by next week. I have so many fun mad scientist explorations planned! I swear, I get as excited as my kiddos.

I love teaching kindergarten.  I follow several blogs which provide some great insight and activities.  One of my favorites is http://www.mrsminersmonkeybusiness.com/. If you haven't visited, give it a look.

My School Promise

Each day I'll do my best

And I won't do any less.

My work will always please me,

And I won't accept a mess.

I'll color very carefully,

My writing will be neat.

And I will not be happy,

Till my papers are complete.

I'll always do my homework,

And try my best on every test.

I won't forget my promise,

To do my very best!
