The Educator's PLN

The personal learning network for educators

I am a high school Spanish teacher.  I have started to dabble in flipping my classroom.  Do you know of any other Spanish teachers that do this?  Or other WL teachers?  I think that this is helping my students learn because I am here to help go through questions they have as they arise.  Also kids are able to see, hear, and watch the target language at work.

Do you use screen casts?  Podcasts?  Actual video of you teaching?  How do you get your focus lesson to your students?

Thanks for any help you can share with me.

Hi Scott

I use both screen casts and podcasts with my Spanish classes.  (Jing and screencast.com have a free account that I suggest you check out.)  I like to reserve class time for communicative activities so anything that students can do at home, such as grammar practice or review explanations or grammar or retells of stories using digital storytelling sites, I post online.  I started using Edmodo in September and it is so useful.  I can upload podcasts and screencasts that I make, link or embed anything from online sites, and even check their homework online before they return to class the next day.  Students love the ease of Edmodo and if they're absent, they know exactly what we did in class because it's posted online.  Other options are a blog or a really simplified blog for you and students is kidblog.

I haven't done any videos of my teaching yet, but if I get the smartboard that is scheduled to be installed in my room, I'd like to experiment with recordings of teachings using the smartboard.

Besides screencasts or podcasts, other sites I would recommend for students to be able to hear your voice as you speak the target language are:  audioboo; mybrainshark; showbeyond.com; & voicethread.  Chirbit is another option but I haven't tried it personally yet.

Thank you very much.  I appreciate it and will be jumping into these things right away.  I was under the impression of doing "worksheets" in class was part of the flip model.  I will split time with communication activities and also with these tasks.  Thank you for the resources.  It is great to have a fellow WL teacher do this as well.  All the examples I have seen have been math and science.  Thanks again.
