Hello! I am an education student from Manitoba, Canada. I have a BA in History and am in my first year of a 2-year BEd. I am completed one student teaching placement and will be starting another 8-week placement in March.

Hello! I graduated from Ohio University with a BS in Education. I am currently a permanent substitute teacher at a private school. Prior to accepting this position I was on the job hunt for 3 months. It seems to be more and more difficult to find a classroom placement.

 

I search weekly on the county job site, but there are not many jobs posted. Any recommendations for websites or other places to find available teaching positions?

Hi! I've been a teacher's aide for the past 6 years in an Elementary School. For the 1st 5 years I was a CM aide, so I primarily worked with students who had learning disabilities. Last year, I graduated from college, received my EC-6 and ESL EC-6 certification, and became a certified teaching assistant. I taught science and assisted the teacher throughout the rest of the day in a 3rd grade LEAP classroom (these students had 140+ IQs) . I enjoyed what I did. Unfortunately, with students moving away, numbers went down and my position went away. This year, I'm looking for a classroom position as an EC-5 teacher. Until I find that position, I will be substitute teaching. I look forward to the opportunity to work at a variety of schools (and students, teachers, admins, families) while I strengthen my teaching skills.

Thought I would share some tips that helped me succeed in the interview and in my 1st years of teaching.

Make certain to emphasize what you can do for the school, not what the school can do for you (sound familiar). Offer something that makes you unique from the multitude of other applications. The mere fact that you are on NING likely puts you a step ahead of the rest!

To get the interviewer's attention, state that your are willing to offer in-house workshops, demonstrating how teachers can integrate ICT into the classroom to improve student success, engagement and equity (make certain you can back this up with specific technologies and implementation strategies). Some examples may include offering interactive white board training, assessment training (using assessment software tools), build/improve the school website (for community outreach, student success), train teachers on how to develop course websites for collaborative student centered learning , etc. Take ownership of one or two initiatives and become the lead person for those initiatives.

Make it clear, that you see administration as part of a partnership with teachers, where we are all part of the same team fighting the battle for student success. You are a self starter, who does not wait around having to be told what to do. You enjoy finding solutions to existing challenges as opposed to complaining about existing problems. You have a passion towards the teaching and the welfare of our children and you are here to make a difference for the school and the community you serve. If you can get this message across with sincerity and conviction, the job is yours!

This approach landed me my first job and has kept me employed ever since.

My name is Cassie Banka (@cbanka on twitter) and I finished student teaching last semester (y'all are in for a ride!) :) My husband and I got married this August and I'm back in Manhattan, KS getting my Master's in Curriculum and Instruction while he finishes his B.S. in Civil Engineering. I'm currently certified to teach 5-12 Mathematics in KS and am looking for my first permanent teaching job next year!

To meet the challenges of student teaching and later as you begin your teaching career it is very important that you are in the best shape possible. You will need a lot of stamina and right now you should be exercising, eating properly and getting plenty of rest. It is normal to be anxious at this point. Joan, I know how you feel. this semester i observed in both of the classes that I will be student teaching in. I am really looking forward for next semester but I am still pretty nervous about the whole thing. I agree with it will be tough for all student teachers next semester, but I think we worry ourselves way too much over it. Student teaching will come and go before we know it.

Bonnie is my classmate and started this group and i think it was a really good idea. We can all collaborate and bounce ideas off of each other.

Hello All-

I am a in an intensive post-baccalaureate program to earn a license to teach high school math. I come from a background of work in the non-profit sector and am excited about my new career path.

Right now I am in a few high school math classrooms most weekdays doing some teaching and observing while I take classes at the college. Next semester I will be taking over the classes I am observing now - yikes! I am looking forward to it, but it will be tough!
