I 've been using a combination of approaches to reading. I have used reader's workshop to teach reading comprehension, when dealing with books. I also try to select different kinds of texts which are connected to the theme(s) we're dealing with. I teach ESL students ages 12 - 16. However, I would appreciate getting more ideas from you all.

Any ideas of using technology to help with early literacy? I'm taking a course on technology and teaching and want to focus on early literacy.

I am a new K-6 teacher from Australia who is passionate about developing strong literacy skills in my students. I am keen to learn as much as I can about the teaching of reading from experienced teachers.

I am here to share the resources that I have collected for the past ten years. During my 32 year teaching career I taught Social Studies, Language Arts, Computers and later served as the school's teacher-librarian.

I am now a new teacher mentor and tech integrator trainer at my district, but prior to that taught 3,4, and 6th grade. My last job in the classroom was reading teacher and we were able to rewrite the curriculum so that it included the 'big eight' reading strategies (taken from Mosaic of Thought by Zimmerman and Keene). The curriculum is now explicit reading strategy instruction- using short stories, short nonfiction pieces, and excerpts for novels. It makes so much sense and is amazing to see how students can improve their comprehension by using their 'conversation voice' (from Cris Tovani). Exciting stuff

I'm looking forward to some reading conversations. I find the teaching of reading fascinating, challenging and addictive. My one teaching assignment is first grade reading- and I have enjoyed teaching the beginners and the advanced. I am a curriculum coordinator and I am currently leading my lower school faculty in a review of teaching reading- focusing on comprehension strategies. We all read Mosaic of Thought (Zimmerman and Keene) and Reading with Meaning (Miller) and are now transforming our teaching. Exciting to see it occur.
