Formative assessment to guide classroom planning

Hi,I'm looking for articles related to the use of formative assessment; particularly the use of formative assessment by teachers in order to plan for greater learning of students.   I want to improve the way I assess within my classroom, and how I use the results, with the hope of increasing the value of my instruction.  I want my lessons to be building on knowledge and filling in the gaps in understanding, not just adding information that leads to students who  "just don't get it."   Any…See More

Using technology in math grade 4, to engage students...ideas for me?

Hello,I'm a grade 4 teacher in BC, Canada, and I'm enrolled in a post-grad. program in integrating technology in teaching. I am looking for ideas to integrate technology into math lessons (starting with whole numbers to 10 000 and addition to 10 000,) in order to better engage students in the lessons and increase their understanding of these concepts. Any ideas for sites, free programs, or lessons themselves will be appreciated. Thank you!See More

Hi Clare!
I got your post on the Educator's PLN. I know this won't help you now, but I know of a guy who is speaking at NYU in November that is talking about "seeing" numbers as large at 10 000. He talks about being able to combine (add and subtract) these numbers by just looking at them. He works mostly in Second Life, a virtual 3D world. His talk will be broadcast from Second Life into the conference center at NYU. Everyone is invited to attend by going into Second Life. It should be very interesting. He claims to be able to teach even very young children to see this math. He is attempting to totally change the way we teach math.

I can give you more information later as I get it if you want.
