Snails, Snoring Elephants, and Civiballs

Want to have some online fun with logic games?

Use critical thinking skills to accomplish goals that become increasingly more difficult as you move through levels. Remember techniques learned from previous levels as they will be needed, especially in combination with others, throughout the game.

Enjoy!                                    …

My Journey As a Teacher Leader...Baby steps!

I just read our Teacher's Working Condition Survey results from the 2011-2012 school year and found that 50% of our teachers feel that they need more training in the area of gifted education in order to meet the needs of gifted learners in the classroom. I consider this a large number considering we have 21 teachers in grades k-6. Since the budget crises and cuts to professional development, I feel that as the gifted teacher this now rests on my shoulders. I suppose an after school meeting…

Entertaining Gifted Students I

If you want to entertain gifted students for, literally, hours, try the following two sites.

Wordle.net can be used in so many ways. My students type vocabulary word lists, write poems, and create character trait posters.

Piclits.com is absolutely AWESOME. It is a wonderful site for reluctant writers. My students amazed me with the poetry they created on…

The Salamander Room- Lesson Idea

My second and third graders read The Salamander Room by Ann Mazer. It's a wonderful book about a boy who finds a salamander in the woods and uses his imagination to think of the things he can do to turn his room into a home for the salamander. The books goes through the changes that takes place so the boy can provide the best environment for this amphibian. I think it's the perfect read for Earth Day. I had the students think of an animal they would like to bring home. They…

Student Mid-Research Deep Sea Challenge Discussion (Fifth Grade)

My fifth graders wanted to have a round table discussion after beginning to follow and research The National Geographic and James Cameron's Deep Sea Challenge. I enjoyed listening to their ideas and questions. It really helped me understand their level of comprehension. There are some ideas and concepts we need to investigate further. They just don't understand the level of depth we are talking about. I am going to have to find resources to help them realize ocean depths, especially abysmal…

My KidBlog Post This Morning...

My post on our class KidBlog site this morning-

"I woke up this morning with a smile on my face, a dance in my step, and a song in my heart. Now this is quite different than most mornings, as I am not a morning person when I have to get up at 5:50am. My children wondered what in the world happened to me, because I had not drunk even one cup of coffee yet, and I was singing and dancing! I even did…the RUNNING MAN! Do you know what I think it is? I think it is SPRING BREAK FEVER! Oh…

Wordle.net is COOL!

Fourth Grade AIG students created this collage using words they associated with AIG class. They practiced using Wordle before creating individual projects with words used to describe the story elements in the novel Dovey Coe by Frances O"Roark Dowell. We will post student work later this week. I look forward to seeing their creations. Fun!…

Trivia Fun

One of my students came in with a link to an interesting website this morning.  This fun trivia site lets students take trivia quizzes and play games to earn badges.  Scores are posted by user name so students can compare their scores and progress to that of others. The administrator (you) can create a group for students to join, and your group can compete against other groups around the world. Great for critical and strategical thinking, and loads of interesting tidbits of information for…
