Missing the Context Misses the Purpose of Lincoln's "Gettysburg Address"

Here is an educational policy riddle: How much background knowledge does a student need to read a historical text?

According to New York Engage website: None.

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are being implemented state by state, and there is an emphasis from teaching students background knowledge to teaching students skills, specifically the skill of close…

What Interdisciplinary Writing Assessments Could Learn from Saturday Night Live

This post completes a trilogy of reflections on the Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT) which will be terminated once the new Smarter Balance Assessments tied to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are implemented. There will be at least one more year of the same CAPT assessments, specifically the Interdisciplinary Writing Prompt (IW) where 10th grade students write a persusive essay in response to news articles. While the horribly misnamed Response to Literature (RTL) prompt…

One statement is the school’s mission statement that quite literally confronts them as they enter a school building. The second statement is the statement of purpose for the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) that currently guides the curriculum for K-12 teachers in states that adopted the CCSS.

Here is an interesting exercise. Below, there are three randomly selected school mission…

Can You Pay Attention for Eight Minutes? NBC Olympic Coverage Says “No”

Watching the Olympics has been a mixture of admiration and frustration. Like many Americans, I was caught by the story of 15-year-old swimmer Katie Ledecky who is the same age of many of my students. At 11:00 PM Friday night, there was engaging hype leading up to her 800 meter freestyle event. The NCB sports commentator noted, "The race will be about eight minutes," before the digital buzz sent the line of swimmers simultaneously into the pool. By the end of the first two minutes, Ledecky…
