5 Ways to Teach Kids Essay Writing at Home

Teachers are busy people. They usually have enough time to go through the lectures and leave space for
discussions at the end of the class. When it comes to teaching essay writing, however, they don’t have enough space
in their program.
They will explain what the essay structure is supposed to look like. They will assign a topic. And that’s it. The
student is left under a huge pressure to figure out the essay writing process.
As parents, we’re responsible to make this easier on our kids. This doesn’t mean we’ll write the essays for them. Oh
no; that’s the worst thing we could do. That approach is only undermining the kid’s creative potential.
We have to support them through the process of essay writing. There’s a right way of doing that: giving them
straightforward explanations, instructions, and prompts. Here are 5 ways to teach your kid essay writing at home:

1. Show Them Examples
Your kid won’t be ready to understand the essays of Ralph Waldo Emerson or another famous essayist, so don’t
even think about showing such examples. However, it’s still important to show them exactly what they need to
achieve with an essay assignment.
For example, you can use Harvard admission essays. Sure; they are more advanced than something your kid would
write, but they prove where a student can get with superb essay writing skills. If you’re looking for something
simpler, you can present real essays for kids.
If you can’t find an essay on the particular topic, you can always connect with a professional writer from an essay
writing service. They will deliver a sample you can work with.

2. Teach Them How to Brainstorm
Whenever the teacher assigns an essay topic and your kid doesn’t know where to start, encourage them to do some
brainstorming. You can use an online tool, such as MindMeister, to make this stage more engaging.
First of all, your kid should think about the things they already know regarding the topic. If they don’t know
anything, help them conduct a preliminary research. Then, the brainstorming process will help them get ideas
based on the knowledge they already have. When they choose a great idea, the rest of the essay writing process
will be much easier.

3. Teach Them about the Structure
When your kid gets an idea, you should show them how they can convey it through a well-structured essay. How
can you do this? Teach them how to create an essay outline! It will be a road map, which will guide them through
the writing process.

4. Give Them Prompts
Your kid learns something new every single day. Let’s say you’re watching an educational video on National Geographic Kids. They get all inspired and want to learn more about the topic. Use that opportunity. Say: “Why
don’t we write an essay about it?”
Let your kid research more, and allow them to write about anything they want. Then, you’ll check the essay and
suggest some structural improvements. Of course, you mustn’t make children feel like they failed. The attempt is a
huge success on its own. With every other essay they write, they will be getting better and better at this.

5. Help Them Collect Resources
You’re probably using Pinterest for all kinds of things. Home decoration ideas, haircuts, recipes, motivation to

exercise, parenting tips… It’s time for your kid to explore the magic of Pinterest, too.
It’s a really cool tool for collecting resources from around the web and organizing them in a clean way. Create
special boards for the essays your kid is working on. When they conduct online research, tell them to pin the
resources they like. They are not able to memorize all information as they read it, and that’s exactly why Pinterest
is so effective. They can always go back to the resources when they start writing.

It’s not easy to teach someone how to write an essay. Who said parenting was easy in the first place? This is yet
another one of your responsibilities. With the tips we listed above, you can even make it fun.

Writing an argumentative essay is very different from writing an academic essay. However, even in an academic essay, you’d still be hoping to persuade the reader to agree with your point of view. This is because you are advocating a certain standpoint, using other people’s words to reinforce your opinion. This means you should put all the evidence in support of your argument at the start or in the middle of your essay. However, every issue has two sides, sometimes more. In an essay, you probably don’t have enough time to delve too deeply into all the intricacies or nuances of the argument, but you’d be remiss to not acknowledge some of the weaknesses in your viewpoints. Accordingly, when you have to acknowledge the facts that go against what you’re saying, put them at the very end. Or you can use the research paper service and for you will do all the work.
